1930 Willys Deluxe Sedan Model 98B, March 1930 - America
Steve Macauley of Connecticut sent in this photo of his Aunt Anna, then 21, taken in March 1930. Anna Trageser and her husband Ernest ("Ernie") resided in Baltimore, Maryland and this photo was probably taken in the Maryland countryside soon after the vehicle was purchased. Note the winged Willys emblem just visible above the Ortel Motors lettering on the spare wheel cover.
Price of the Deluxe Willys Six at $850 was quite a bargain when compared with the Willys Knight 70B list price of $1045. Although the Willys Knight was marketed as a more prestigious car, the new Willys Six had a brand new side valve engine design developing 65 bhp as against just 53 bhp for the sleeve valve Willys Knight 70B. The reason for the lower price of the Willys Six were reduced tooling and manufacturing costs for the sidevalve engine, and no Royalty fee for using the patented Knight engine.
